Las Cruces, NM -- A new movie, titled Captain Fantastic, is set to start filming in Las Cruces within the next month. The film stars Academy Award Best Actor Nominee Viggo Mortensen as an idealistic father of six who tries to assimilate back into society after living ‘off the grid’ in the forests of the Pacific Northwest for ten years.
Starring opposite Mortensen will be three time Tony Award winner and Academy Award Nominee Frank Langella. The film, written and directed by Matt Ross, is being produced by Electric City Entertainment and ShivHans Pictures.
Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima stated, “It’s wonderful to have a film like Captain Fantastic choose Las Cruces as a film location. Film production is a great way to promote Las Cruces, create jobs and bring outside dollars to the region, and the City will be stepping up its efforts to recruit more film production to Las Cruces region.” The film will bring a cast and crew of more than 100 to Las Cruces for nine to eleven days of filming.
Las Cruces Economic Development Coordinator Gary Camarano said, “The city has a growing film industry cluster and tremendous assets that when combined with state film incentives, should make Las Cruces a top choice for film locations. I think we’ll see a definite uptick in film activity as we promote the area more.”
Louise Runge, Line Producer for the New Mexico shoot expressed, “We’re really excited about filming here. The City has been super helpful to our production efforts and the area has a wide variety of locations and resources. I hope the production adds as much to Las Cruces as Las Cruces is adding to the film.”
Captain Fantastic Location Manager Deborah Wakshull added, “In addition to our cast and crew coming to town we’re going to be reaching into the local talent pool. I too am thrilled about the choice of locations that exists here and the enthusiasm and assistance that we are receiving from the locals, business community and NMSU’s Creative Media Institute is just wonderful. It is going to be great to film here.”
Besides bringing approximately 900 hotel nights to the city, the film production will also contribute to a number of other local businesses. According to Camarano, “Everything from transportation services, dining, equipment providers, caterers, accounting services and more are possible beneficiaries. It will also present Las Cruces as a whole in a positive light.”
