Port Freeport Recognizes Shintech for Environmental Stewardship

PHOTO CUTLINE:  Several Port Freeport Commissioners, team members from the EDF, Port Freeport, and Shintech celebrates the receipt of the award.

Freeport, TX -- Port Freeport Commissioners proudly presented Shintech with the “Partners in Environmental Stewardship Award” at the December 17th regular commission meeting.

Shintech received the award for using the Heavy Lift Corridor (HLC) as part of their operations. This project started four years ago by Port Freeport, as a result of Texas House Bill 1305, which was authored by Representative Dennis Bonnen and supported by Senator Joan Huffman.  The Bill was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2011. The Heavy Lift Corridor lowers the truck pollution by 20-22%, fees paid by the trucks help pay for highway maintenance so the local tax payers save tax dollars.  Also, the corridor makes the highways safer.

Chairman Ravi Singhania said “We want to thank Shintech and the Environmental Defense Fund for working with Port Freeport”.

“EDF Climate Corps Fellow Steven Washington worked with Port Freeport to improve local air quality,” stated Dr. Elena Craft, Senior Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund.

“We hope that industry in the local area will join with us and Port Freeport to use the Corridor to lower emissions and provide a better quality of life for the people of Brazoria County, when possible” said Tim O’Brien, Plant Manager at Shintech.
