Honda Manufacturing of Alabama and its suppliers had a $12 billion economic impact on Alabama in 2018, employ over 45,000 in the state and produce 5.4 percent of the total Alabama GDP, according to a report released this week by the automaker and Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA).

In its “Honda Economic Impact Study,” the University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research was commissioned to examine the economic and fiscal impacts of Honda and its 26 key Tier 1 suppliers located across the state. The manufacturing plant, which started production in 2001 in Lincoln, Ala., recently celebrated 5 million vehicles produced in Alabama – the first Alabama automaker to hit that mark, said Steve Sewell, executive vice president at EDPA.

“Honda is so instrumental to our success in economic development,” Sewell said.

Wilmington, DE -- Manufacturing in America continues to be the largest economic multiplier of any industry sector, according to the National Association of Manufacturers. Delaware's manufacturing and advanced manufacturing sector are supporting that growth.

In Delaware, there was 33 percent growth this year in the students expected to complete the advanced manufacturing pathway, offered through Delaware Tech.

Kurt Foreman, President and CEO of the Delaware Prosperity Partnership, the public-private partnership that manages economic development for the state of Delaware, says that approximately half the companies looking to expand in Delaware or relocate to Delaware fall into the manufacturing sector.

A strong workforce is needed to support this growth. In Delaware, a unique training program that starts in high school is ensuring there are eager and qualified professionals to support the sector. The Pathways to Prosperity program continues with training and degree options at regional colleges and universities, including Delaware Technical Community College and proceeds into adulthood with widely-available "up-skilling" programs for existing manufacturing workers to grow and advance in their fields.

Delaware's Pathways programs are gaining in popularity among students and their parents. This year, there was 33% growth in the students expected to complete the advanced manufacturing pathway, offered through Delaware Tech. The growth is expected to continue.

Worth nearly $5 billion and accounting for more than 96% of the state's global exports, Delaware's manufactured goods industry is robust, creating deep supply chains and supporting the market entry and growth of new businesses. The manufacturing sector is one of the largest employers in the region, accounting for 5.6% of total employment in Delaware and 6.7% in the broader region.

Delaware's manufacturing sector includes a robust advanced materials manufacturing sector with structural and fabricated metals, paper products, electrical equipment, aerospace products, printing, and furniture. The manufacturing and logistics sector intersects with Delaware's science and technology sector, with firms like Agilent and Chemours producing chemicals and medical devices and with the food and agricultural sector with firms like Pepsi Bottling Ventures and Kraft Heinz manufacturing food and beverage products.

Delaware has a wealth of competitive advantages for manufacturing, advanced materials manufacturing and logistics companies. Delaware's strategic location allows companies to reach more than 50 million people within 250 miles; and public and private investment is rapidly expanding existing infrastructure. Most notably, the Port of Wilmington—already a full-service, strategically located Mid-Atlantic seaport serving more than 200 million North American consumers—is set for $600 million in upgrades in coming years. Competitive tax rates make choosing Delaware highly attractive, especially when compared to other states in the region.

Additional Competitive Advantages

  • Close proximity to major airports, with international and domestic cargo capabilities
  • Major International port, four hours from the Atlantic Ocean
  • First Foreign Trade Zone to receive approval with an Alternative Site Framework
  • Freight rail services throughout the state
  • Well-connected roads, with I-95 in Northern Delaware, the most-travelled interstate in the U.S.
  • For more information about advanced manufacturing in Delaware, visit the Delaware Prosperity Partnership's website.

Major Activity at the Port Supports Increase in Jobs and Revenue for the State and Region

Brownsville, Texas -- In Texas where a trade-friendly economy is growing, the Port of Brownsville supports a total of $3 billion in total economic activity for the state and is responsible for more than 51,000 jobs within the borders.

Such findings are based on an independent analysis conducted by Martin Associates on port activity for the 2018 calendar year.

“We celebrated a record year in tonnage earlier and are pleased to see our economic impact set a strong foundation for future growth,” said John Reed, Brownsville Navigation District Chairman. “The numbers on local job growth speak for themselves as factors in the port’s development into a hub of business activity.”

The Port of Brownsville has become a major center for industrial development with over 230 companies doing business in the region. Furthermore, 51,468 jobs in Texas are related to the cargo moving through the marine terminals and activity at the ship building and rig repairs. Personal income from such employment totaled at $2.6 billion. In addition, a total of more than $200 million in tax revenue were generated by activities at the port.

The study found 8,500 local jobs are supported by $151.3 million of local purchases by business supplying services at the marine terminals and by business dependent upon the port for ship and receipt of cargo.

“The data clearly show that the Port of Brownsville is a remarkable resource with a reach extending far beyond the Rio Grande Valley,” said economist John Martin, PhD, who authored the latest report. “With more than 51,000 jobs related to the port’s operations and more than $3 billion in total economic impact across the state, the port is a significant driver of opportunities today and in the future.”

Not included in the report are revenues from leases and rents, non-waterborne activities and fishing harbor operations. These values will be mentioned in future economic impact reports.

The Port of Brownsville is a hub of major economic activity. In 2018, the port set new records in tonnage, moving 11.3 million short tons of diverse cargo of energy and liquid products, agriculture goods, aggregates, wind-turbine components and steel. The port also generated more than $24 million in operating revenue. Such activity is set to continue the positive impacts on the region’s economy and workforce.

The analysis was based on interviews from firms providing services to the cargo and vessels handled in marine terminals at the navigation districts. Impacts measured were jobs, employee earnings, business revenue and state and local taxes.

About the Port of Brownsville
