E-commerce retailer to open new facility in Savannah

Savannah, GA -- Governor Nathan Deal announced that Wayfair Inc., one of the world’s largest online destinations for the home, will create 1,000 jobs and open a new 1,164,800-square-foot facility in Savannah. New jobs will include supervisory, administrative and warehouse positions. Wayfair and its landlord plan to invest approximately $45 million in the project over the next five years.

“As the gateway to the Southeastern market and beyond, Georgia continues to attract and retain industry leaders such as Wayfair as they look to expand operations,” said Deal. “By establishing this new facility in Savannah, it’s clear that Wayfair’s leadership recognizes the strength of our workforce, as well as our dedication to preserving Georgia’s top-ranked and nationally recognized business climate. Georgia’s high-performing transportation infrastructure and strategic resources, including our world-class ports system, will help Wayfair expand its distribution network and support the company’s plans for long-term growth. Tomball, TX — The Tomball Economic Development Corporation (TEDC), is pleased to announce that it has sold its fifth lot in the Tomball Business & Technology Park.  The buyer, Dkota Investments, Inc. of Dallas, is a national company that provides build-to-suit facilities in the warehouse and mixed-use segments for large multi-national corporations as well as smaller, privately owned businesses.   

Dkota Investments, Inc. purchased 4 acres in the Tomball Business and Technology Park for a 20,000 square foot build-to-suit distribution center for Bimbo Bakeries, USA. This project is anticipated to create 14 new full-time jobs operating two 8-hour shifts within the city of Tomball once operational later in 2019.

Jackson County, GA — Governor Nathan Deal announced that SK innovation, a developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid electric vehicles, is estimated to create more than 2,000 jobs and invest $1.67 billion in a new manufacturing plant in Jackson County in the long term.

“As the No. 1 state for business six times over, Georgia continues to maintain strong partnerships with Korean businesses and international industry leaders that lead to real results,” said Deal. “SK innovation’s decision to make this significant investment and create more than 2,000 jobs in Jackson County reflects Georgia’s reputation as a top destination for international businesses, especially those in the automotive supply sector. By choosing Georgia, SK innovation will have access to our skilled workforce and extensive manufacturing resources, while also joining a number of other Korean-affiliated companies that operate manufacturing facilities across the state. St. James Parish project will result in 1,230 new direct, indirect jobs

Convent, LA -- Governor John Bel Edwards and Wanhua Chemical Group Co. Ltd. executive Weiqi Hua announced the company will develop a $1.25 billion chemical manufacturing complex in the St. James Parish community of Convent, Louisiana. The 250-acre manufacturing site will be developed at the northwest corner of the intersection of Louisiana Highways 3125 and 3214, on the east bank of the Mississippi River with deep-draft river access and available rail service.

The project will create 170 new direct jobs with an average annual salary of more than $80,000, plus benefits. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in additional 1,060 new indirect jobs, for a total of 1,230 new permanent jobs in the state. Wanhua will leverage its $1.25 billion capital investment to produce MDI, or methylene diphenyl diisocyanate. MDI is commonly used for polyurethane automotive parts, foams and elastomers, with applications in such consumer areas as appliances, electronics, spray-foam insulation, furniture, textiles and footwear.

1901 Group to invest $4 million to expand Enterprise IT Operations Center and corporate footprint 

Richmond, VA — Governor Ralph Northam announced that 1901 Group, a trusted provider of IT services for the public and private sectors, will invest $4 million to expand its Enterprise IT Operations Center headquartered in Montgomery County and its corporate offices in Fairfax County. The company will receive funding for the project from the Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP), which will support the addition of 580 new jobs in Montgomery County and 225 new jobs in Fairfax County by 2021.

“The decision by 1901 Group to expand its operations in Montgomery and Fairfax Counties is a strong testament to Virginia’s ability to compete for major projects that will result in tremendous opportunity for citizens across the Commonwealth,” said Governor Ralph Northam. “With one of the largest technology talent pools in the nation, Virginia’s thriving IT industry promises high anticipated growth and upward mobility for employees. We thank 1901 Group for creating more than 800 new 21st-century jobs and for contributing to our efforts to ensure that all Virginians, no matter who they are or where they live, have access to a promising future.”

2.5-million-square-foot campus in Milwaukee Harbor District could create more than 400 jobs

Madison, WI — Komatsu Mining Corporation announced plans to build a new state-of-the-art headquarters and manufacturing campus in Milwaukee – a project with the potential to create more than 400 jobs.

“With a 134-year history in Milwaukee, Komatsu is one of Wisconsin’s oldest employers, and we thank the company for making a long-term commitment to our state with this significant investment, which will position Komatsu for continued growth,” Governor Scott Walker said. “We are pleased to be able to add Komatsu to the growing list of longtime Wisconsin companies that have decided to grow here because of the state’s strong business climate and dedicated workforce.”

Nashville to be home to 5,000 new jobs

Nashville, TN — Amazon announced its decision to create 5,000 new jobs in Nashville in its new Operations Center of Excellence.

The Operations Center of Excellence will serve as the company’s Eastern U.S. hub for the company’s Retail Operations division and will be located in downtown Nashville. Nashville and the state of Tennessee will benefit from Amazon’s 5,000 full-time, high-paying jobs, $230 million in capital investment and one million square feet of energy-efficient office space. Currently, the company employs approximately 2,500 people in the Nashville region across four distribution centers. Amazon invested more than $5 billion into Tennessee between 2011-2017, including customer fulfillment infrastructure and employee compensation. Company investments have added more than $4 billion to Tennessee’s GDP.

Amazon’s decision to create 5,000 new jobs at its Operations Center of Excellence in Nashville makes this the largest jobs announcement since the inception of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Partnership 2020 economic development initiative in 1990.

Dynamic new shop/Makerspace at CSU made possible thanks to a partnership with The Austin Company

Cleveland, OH -- Cleveland State University has opened a new state-of-the-art, hands-on, woodshop within The Dan T. Moore Makerspace at the Washkewicz College of Engineering. The facility, made possible through a collaboration between The Austin Company and CSU will contain teaching space, multiple pieces of woodworking equipment and an advanced Shopbot, a 3-axis CNC machine for fabricating wood, plastic and aluminum.  

In recognition of The Austin Company’s support in making the facility possible, CSU is pleased to announce the new woodshop will be named the Samuel Austin Woodshop (SAW), after company founder, Samuel Austin. The SAW will provide CSU students with maker-based learning opportunities through hands-on workshops, industry expertise and student projects.

Automotive and appliance supplier investing approximately $14 million

Nashville, TN — Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe and Truform Manufacturing LLC officials announced that the automotive and appliance supplier will invest approximately $14 million to expand its operations in Dickson and create nearly 90 jobs over the next five years.

“Tennessee’s existing businesses are the driving force behind our economic growth and job creation,” Rolfe said. “Truform’s expansion underscores the many advantages Tennessee offers global businesses. This is Truform’s third major expansion since 2012, and I’d like to thank the company for creating nearly 90 quality job opportunities in Middle Tennessee and strengthening its commitment to Dickson County.”

Carry-On Trailer, Inc. to expand manufacturing operation

Montross, VA — Governor Ralph Northam announced that Carry-On Trailer, Inc., a leading manufacturer of steel and utility trailers, will invest $1.6 million to expand its facility in Westmoreland County. Virginia successfully competed against Georgia and Pennsylvania for this investment opportunity, which will create 42 new jobs and allow Carry-On Trailer to meet growing market demand for its products.

“Virginia’s manufacturing sector is an important engine for economic development in rural communities across our Commonwealth, and it is an honor to partner with companies like Carry-On Trailer that catalyze industry growth and job creation,” said Governor Northam. “We thank Carry-On Trailer for reinvesting in Westmoreland County and look forward to the addition of 42 new jobs in the Northern Neck with this expansion.”

$7.4 million expansion in New Richmond expected to create 52 jobs

Madison, WI — Federal Foam Technologies Inc., a leading global supplier in the foam and plastics industry, is expanding its operations at its New Richmond facility – a $7.3 million project expected to create 52 new jobs over the next three years.

“Wisconsin is proud to be home to innovative and forward-thinking companies like Federal Foam Technologies,” said Mark R. Hogan, secretary and CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), the state’s lead economic development organization. “This project marks the latest example of companies choosing to establish or expand operations in Wisconsin because of our positive business climate and dedicated workforce.”

Brownsville, TX — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has awarded the Port of Brownsville a $1.5 million Rider 45 grant to enhance the port’s intermodal connectivity, further facilitating domestic and international trade in the Rio Grande Valley.

The state funds will be used for the construction of the South Port Connector Project, which is part of the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority’s (CCRMA) East Loop Corridor plan. When complete, the port connector road will span two miles and will connect Ostos Road at the port with State Highway 4.

“The Port of Brownsville is a valuable asset to the Texas economy and a major economic force in the region,” said John Reed, Brownsville Navigation District Chairman. “Infrastructure improvements such as the port connector facilitate our efforts in strengthening the port’s position as the main hub for domestic and international trade in South Texas.”

Jesup, GA — Due to overwhelming demand for the Sierra REB line of two-ram balers and conveyors, Sierra International Machinery is adding a 24,000-square-foot expansion at their manufacturing facility in Jesup, Georgia. This expansion will allow Sierra the ability to increase production and meet the demand for the full Sierra product line, and is the third expansion Sierra has added to its Georgia facility since it opened in 2008.
