Kissimmee, FL -- The University of Central Florida will partner with Osceola County and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council to establish a state-of-the-art research and incubation facility focused on the next generation of universal smart sensors.

The goal of the Florida Advanced Manufacturing Research Center is to recruit or create the world’s first industry-led smart sensor consortium. Formed to make Florida a global leader in a rapidly growing industry, the center will be the home of research aimed at advancing technologies that will shape the future of automobiles, surgical devices, home appliances and a host of other devices.

As these innovations become ready for the marketplace, the center’s partners envision a growth in high-wage jobs for Central Floridians as existing companies expand and new companies move to the region to collaborate with the center’s researchers.

“This center holds great potential for becoming another economic game changer for our entire region – and the timing for such an endeavor could hardly be better,” said UCF President John C. Hitt.

Sensors allow us to see, hear, touch, taste, and smell beyond our capabilities. Sensors can detect things that we cannot, such as deadly carbon monoxide. They can show how diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease affect the human body, helping doctors provide more effective drug treatments.

Princeton, NJ -- There’s a new online tool available to businesses that want to better understand the job creation incentives available through the New Jersey Economic Opportunity Act of 2013. Launched by Choose New Jersey Inc., the Incentives Calculator considers input such as location, job creation and real estate type before giving users a customized calculation of tax incentives their businesses have the potential to qualify for by creating jobs and investing in New Jersey.
“This tool is an easy first step for business leaders, site selection consultants and real estate professionals that are looking to better understand state incentives,” said Tracye McDaniel, President and CEO of Choose New Jersey. “The Economic Opportunity Act has boosted New Jersey as a strategic location for business and we want to equip those who are considering locating or expanding in the State with a simple tool to estimate potential benefits under this game-changing legislation.”
Noted as one of the most significant legislation overhauls in New Jersey’s history, the Economic Opportunity Act simplifies New Jersey’s tax incentive programs into two powerful offerings: the Grow NJ Assistance program and the Economic Redevelopment and Growth (ERG) Program. It reduces the threshold for the size of investment a company needs to make to qualify for tax breaks to as low as 10 full-time jobs for technology start-ups and 25 new jobs in targeted industries, including transportation, manufacturing, defense, energy, logistics, life sciences, technology, health and finance.

GE Aviation, a global leader in jet engine and aircraft system production, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony June 5 at the site of its machining factory in West Jefferson.
GE Aviation's Randy Hobbs, general manager, rotating parts and compressor airfoils and Tim Tucker, West Jefferson plant manager, were joined by Rep. Virginia Foxx and officials from the town of West Jefferson, Ashe County and the North Carolina Department of Commerce to commemorate the groundbreaking.

The new 80,000-square-foot expansion will allow for increased capacity as the shop assumes additional machining work. The increase in volume is driven largely by orders for the new LEAP jet engine of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company of GE and Snecma (Safran) of France. To date, CFM has logged total orders and commitments with airlines for more than 6,000 LEAP engines -- and it does not enter service until 2016.  It will power new Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX, and COMAC (China) C919 aircraft for airlines worldwide.
